Overview

MEETS CARE CERTIFICATE STANDARD 13

Course Aim
To provide participants whose role includes supporting people requiring minimal physical assistance and also object handling, with the necessary knowledge and skills to do so in a safe and effective manner and within the current legislative context.

Target Audience
For carers, personal assistants or family members who provide minimal physical assistance to support people (who may use a walking aid or wheelchair):
• In Day Centres,
• In their own homes,
• To be able to leave their homes,
• To be able to access the community.

For carers and personal assistants who move objects (vacuum cleaners/ shopping) as part of their day to day role.

Managers of these services will also benefit from this course as a foundation on which to build good evidence-based practice in the workplace.

Course Content
o Awareness of reflective person-centred practice.
o Introduction to current legislation relating to the MH of People.
o Risk Assessment – identifying and reporting risks.
o Overview of controversial or high risk handling techniques.
o Biomechanics of the spine and causes and prevention of back pain and injury.
o Principles of safer, enabling MH.
o Practising techniques using minimal physical assistance and preparation of the environment.
o Managing the fallen person.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the course participants will have:
• An understanding of the principles of an enabling approach.
• An awareness and understanding of legislation relevant to MH,
• An understanding of risk factors related to their job role using TILEEO Risk Assessment (Task, Individual, Load, Environment, Equipment, Other),
• An awareness and understanding of the biomechanics of the spine and the prevention of sudden or cumulative back pain and injury,
• Practised safer MH principles, considered postural and environmental factors, when supporting a person who requires minimal physical assistance and who may use walking aids or a wheelchair.
• An understanding of the safer handling of manual wheelchairs.
• An understanding of the factors to consider to support the fallen person.

Certification:
 A certificate of attendance will be awarded on completion of the course; this will be sent to your workplace.
 The National Back exchange (NBE) recommends annual training for those whose work involves the handling of people.
 All training should be followed by on the job supervision and evaluation.
