Catheter and Stoma Care for non-clinical staff ie care homes, domiciliary care and personal assistants. This is a clinical care awareness course
Course Outline
- Anatomy of the bladder/urethra and reasons for catheterisation
- Demonstration and practice of catheter care using male and female manikins
- Troubleshooting problems
- Discussion regarding urinary tract infections signs and symptoms
- Anatomy of the bowel
- What is a stoma and why is it formed?
- Differences between stomas, EG colostomy ileostomy and urostomy
- General principles of stoma care
Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate safe and effective catheter care
- Show an awareness of the different risks for male and female patients
- Show an understanding of the signs and symptoms of UTI
- Show an awareness of the anatomy of the bowel
- Demonstrate an understanding of the reasons for stoma formation and the different types of stoma
- Discuss the care of a patient with a stoma
this is a 3 hour course.
