Overview

MEETS CARE CERTIFICATE STANDARD 9

Course aim:

The aim of this course is to provide staff working in health and social care and those supporting individuals with dementia with the basic knowledge and skills to provide person-centred care. This course will provide learners with an awareness of dementia including understanding causes, signs and symptoms of dementia as well as exploring different models to understand dementia.

Target audience:

This course is aimed at:
– health and social care staff providing support to individuals with dementia including residential care staff, domiciliary staff, day care staff, Personal Assistants, volunteers and managers
– learners with little or no prior knowledge of dementia wishing to develop their awareness of dementia
– learners who have previously completed an awareness course and would like a refresher
– learners who are considering undertaking a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care
– individuals whose lives are, or have been, affected by someone with dementia

Course content:

This course will cover the following content:

 Introduction to dementia
 Understanding term dementia
 Key functions of brain affected by dementia
 Conditions mistaken by dementia
 Theoretical models of dementia
 Medical model of dementia
 Social model of dementia
 Dementia, the disability
 Identifying most common causes of dementia
 Likely signs and symptoms of dementia
 Risk factors/prevalence rates of dementia

Learning objectives:

At the end of the course learners will be able to:

 Recognise and have greater understanding of dementia
 Discuss some of the most common causes/types of dementia
 Complete assignment for Dementia (if working towards level 2 diploma)
 Identify 6 main parts of brain commonly associated with dementia
 Understand theoretical models of dementia
 Understand what is meant by a person-centred approach to dementia care
