Overview

MEETS CARE CERTIFICATE STANDARD 13

Course Aim

The aim of this course is to teach the practical skills needed to correctly select, administer and record medication from original packs and monitored dosage systems (MDS blister packs).

Target Audience

This course is aimed at staff working in a variety of care settings including; care homes, day care, and community settings. It is aimed at staff with all levels of experience from those new to administering medication through to experienced nurses. It may also be useful for staff who require a refresher course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, learners should know how to:
· Administer and record medicines taken from original packs and single MDS blister packs
· Record medicines taken on time
· Record flexible doses
· Check once opened dates and expiry dates
· Check cautionary and advisory labels
· Select and administer medications in a systematic way
· Give and record medicines from mixed MDS blister packs
· Measure out oral liquids accurately (spoons versus measuring cups versus syringes)
· Administer using oral syringes
· Apply creams, ointments and barrier creams
· Administer inhalers with spacers
· Apply eye drops

There is also additional time for discussions and answering questions from learners.

Assessment

Workshop: Learners competence to administer and record will be assessed using simulated medicines rounds. Each learner must attain a certain standard in order to gain a certificate. Feedback will be provided for managers detailing how staff performed and what support might be required for learners who do not pass the assessment. medication Each learner will be assessed by simulated medicines round on the day
